Armory Show opens in Boston.

1913

(to 5/19) Officially the International Exhibition of Modern Art, it is sponsored by the Copley Society and held at Copley Hall. It contains less than quarter of the art shown previously in New York and Chicago and only those by European artists. Although the full shows are credited with launching the modern art movement in the U.S., the smaller Boston version is panned locally, with the Christian Science Monitor calling it, “An insult to art . . . [that] would be funny if it wasn’t so impudent.” The show’s poor reception in Boston bolsters the Boston School artists and their defense of traditional art.
